ATTENTION: RESIDENTS AND OUTDOOR POOL USERS

 

   The Activities Committee and Pet Club have proposed a dog swim (“doggie dip”) in the Outdoor Pool on the evening of Monday, Sept. 6 (Labor Day).  It may be held either from 7:30-8:30 pm (closing the pool to resident swimming one hour early) or from 8:30-9:30 pm (when barking noise may disturb residents).  Although this is against Montebello’s Rules and Regulations (#4-G-2 prohibiting animals in/near our swimming pool), frowned upon by the Fairfax County Health Department (and against Fairfax County Health Code 69.1-1-15 prohibiting animals near or in condominiums’ outdoor pools when pools are open), our Board of Directors is currently leaning 5-4 in favor of approving this event at its next Board meeting on Aug. 10.  If the Board approves this, it would make an unusual selective exception to our Rules and ignore the 60+ residents/outdoor pool users who have already signed a petition opposing this event. 

   Some other Virginia condos have previously held such events at their outdoor pools, with mixed results.  Also, there are already official County-sponsored dog swims nearby in Arlington County and at Ford’s Landing at the Potomac River, where the dogs could go for a swim.  Or this event could be held jointly at a nearby facility where it is allowed.

   The Pet Club claims this will be “fun” for pets to swim in chlorinated water.  At the event, dogs would be able to somehow enter and swim freely in the outdoor pool, but pet owners would not be allowed to enter the pool at any time, even to save their pets from potential injury/drowning.  Lifeguards need to be present and compensated accordingly.  The pool water would still be drained and the pool completely cleaned next spring.  However, potential health and safety hazards, as well as potential pool/pool deck damage and risks to those with pet allergies, are of critical concern to residents who use the pool.
